FOCUS Art Fair 2024

10 - 13 October

Saatchi Gallery, London

Booth G 7.4

Recognized as one of the Top Ten Most Creative Artists in 2024 by MSN Magazine, Michelle Jung’s solo booth at FOCUS Art Fair consists of work in oil and oil stick on paper, continues the artist’s conversation of the passage of time, existence, and identity while challenging conventional realism. The exhibition marks the artist’s first international work debut on view in person. Eight diptychs will be available in the treasured emerald hue seen in her successful Mirage series. Also on display is the artist’s newest investigation of work on a long scroll showing the passage of time. “Working on paper is challenging because of the material's fragility and the mark-making's permanence. Two opposing forces that translate into my work’s themes of nature and transformation.” _Michelle Jung

“MIRAGE is a series of work I have continued for this exhibition of new paintings on paper. This is my first series, developed in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, at my new studio/gallery space in the high elevations of the Mojave Desert.” _Michelle Jung

Combining chiaroscuro and glazing techniques suggestive of Renaissance painters and a monochromatic style inspired by the color field painters of the 40s and 50s, Jung adds an innovative method of a luminal surface that becomes translucent and three-dimensional under a light like that of a computer screen. Each of the pieces is a diptych, meaning each consists of two paintings side by side. Both paintings are a mirror image of one another. Where the diptych meets, a new image activates and stimulates the viewer, making them aware of how they interact physiologically with the artwork.

In this series, Jung asks: Has modern technology changed our view of nature, its color palette, and our need to manipulate all images with filters? Has a world viewed by computers, mobile phones, and social media forever changed our connection and relationship with nature?

As Jung continues to move her home and studio, her work evolves. It explores the passage of time, existence, and identity while challenging conventional realism.
